I just received a call from maktok telling paklong Desa is dead. I need to call mak to inform her about this breaking news. Hopefully they are not far away home cuz the funeral will be held after evening prayer.
This is the first death news in Ramadan for me. Another person left the world for a new born life.
Let me tell you a bit about paklong Desa. First time heard his name, I wonder why he has a name acronym to village because ‘desa’ in English means village. He used to be a gardener at my primary school. Later on I figured out that he was somehow related to my family. He married to one of my late grandfather’s nieces.
He didn’t talk much. He was a lone ranger, keep himself for himself. It was hard to see him mingle around with people. When students tried to play around him, he chased them with his loud voice and ugly face. And because of that, most of the students thought he was a shaman which has black magic.
I still remember a friend which I already forgot his name told me that he used to go at the back of the school during recess time. There, located an almost ruin fort believes belong to the Japanese army during WW2 and an old school building. My friend said he will make himself disappear there. It was hard for me to believe that story though the whole school did.
Derived by ‘Secret 5' story, I decided to investigate him. One day, I skipped myself from my friends. I had mission that day – investigating Desa the gardener. I saw him walking alone, heading to the old fort. I followed him, exactly like Mat Gelap. Then I saw him entering the fort. Slowly, I tried to get close to the building.
Actually, I was investigating him which supposes to be secret like peeping. But I ended up by entering the main door to find him. A bit stupid, huh. I found him in there but I couldn’t say any words. I was surprise by what I saw. Then he asked me, “what are you doing here?” .“Nothing”, to make it stereotype.
I couldn’t imagine spending the whole recess with to him that day. Actually, he didn’t disappear himself or practicing any black magic in the building. He just cleaned up the building and fixed up the damage tables. So, I helped him out while talking to him. He wasn’t a bad old man and he was a soft spoken man too.
He told me that he knew what the students thought about him. He said he did that because there were many bad boys at school who badly behaved. Later on, cikgu Zainol came with some of the fixing equipments. That means he wasn’t totally alone in that building everyday since cikgu Zainol told me that he always around if he has nothing to do.
Well, today this guy is dead. I hope he will rest in peace. A moment with him really taught me not to believe rumours.
