My Old Time Favourite Kings


1882 - 1943 Paduka Sri Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah II ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin al-Mukarram Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Kedah Darul Aman.

The facts :

  1. born 4th June 1864, third son of Paduka Sri Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin III al-Mukarram Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zainal Rashid al-Mu'azzam Shah, Sultan of Kedah by his first wife, Wan Hajar binti Datuk Wan Ismail, Mak Wan Besar.
  2. Succeeded on the death of his brother, 22nd September 1881.
  3. the 26th ruler of Kedah Darul Aman.
  4. Attended the Coronation of the King-Emperor George V and Queen-Empress Mary, at Westminster Abbey in London, 1911.
  5. Malaysia first Prime Minister' father (Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj)
  6. Wives :
  • i) married (first) Y.M. Che' Sepa Chandra [Spacendera] (d. at Alor Star, 10th February 1907, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar).
  • ii) married (second) Y.M. Che' Larasa, Che' Puan Paduka Bonda (d. at Alor Star, 12th May 1946, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar).
  • iii) married (third) Y.M. Tuan Sharifa Mariam.
  • iv) married (fourth) (div.) Y.M. Che' Sofia binti 'Abdu'llah.
  • v) married (fifth) at Alor Star, 1886, Y.M. Che' Manja Lara [Cik Menyalara], Mak Che' (b. 1869; d. at Alor Star, 23rd April 1941, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), née Nearng.
  • vi) married (sixth) at Padang Pusing, Kuala Muda, 1892, Y.M. Tuan Sharifa Seha binti Sayyid Husain.
  • vii) married (seventh) Tuan Sharifa Fatima binti Sayyid Idrus.
  1. had issue: twenty-one sons and sixteen daughters.
Why I like :
  1. He was the most famous king of Kedah and the most respected king by the Kedah people.
  2. In Kedah, you may find mostly an Indian shop or a Chinese grocery and also Malay shop nowadays adorning the wall with a potrait of the Sultan in full regalia. It is believed to confer good luck. I did it to in my room...hehehe.
  3. Many wonderful tales that are bandied from mouth to mouth about him being a Wali (or saint).

Hi,
I believe Sultan Abdul Hamid had 8 wives. You have missed out Che Larasah. From my counting he had 43 children 25 males and 18 females. Just a point s that you may check out.Yes he is a great sultan having left many historical buildings (development) during his reign
